Command Outpost Prototype, Part 2

Big thanks to G1Hexatron at the Air Raiders fan page for providing some additional shots of Air Raider sketches that were up on ebay a while back. I covered some of the sketches that were there but the seller did not have photos of all of them.

Here’s the rest of them, starting with another page of various ideas for the use of bellows. The page is labeled as “Air Raiders 1988 New Functions.” There’s a strange dome that has all it’s exterior panels blow off. I’m not sure if this was a cool way to show “damage?” Next to that is an earthquake platform; probably some kind of HQ defense. The designers made another attempt at a grasping claw whose claws would open when the bellows was pushed. There’s a dual piston chamber that utilized a ball bearing to shut off one side or the other. Seems like they worked that idea further with the Hawkwind and Twin Lightning. And last is a ladder! I have no idea what the plan with that was but I’d love to find out!

This page has some really cool early Outpost designs! First it look as though (maybe?) that the Outpost detached into two halves. This version had two towers! They may have both been pumps for the various air-powered connections although one may have had it’s own missile launcher as well. This outpost had some familiar gimmicks and some ones that were never used. The collapsing rock trap was not part of the main base but a separate feature like the missile launchers. There was a cannon but also a catapult! And there’s a note about a vehicle launch as well, probably similar to what the Man-O-War and Air Refinery ended up with.

Here we have some art depicting the proper way to apply all the stickers. The final design is solid at this point.

Last is not a Command Outpost sketch but one from the Air Refinery! Even better, it’s of the stickers they would have made. I would love the chance to take these drawings and actually make some stickers from them. I’ve started the plans for a homemade Air Refinery and these would go nicely with it.
